Dictator is the first album of the hard Visual kei band Dio ~Distraught Overlord~.
The album begins with HAUNTING, one of the best and most refined tracks from this band up to date! The intro and the guitars have D'espairsRay-at-best (heck, it even sounds more like D'espairsRay than D'espairsRay does nowadays) written all over, the literally haunting (nice title pick) mood, mystic and dark layers, the tension which doesn't hold still, not even a second make this track a powerful and breathtaking way to start an album making you want more! Seriously, this left my jaw hanging.
And the blast and excitement doesn't stop on SPLENDID WORLD a bone crushing, grinding, mincer of distorsion and growling. Fast and furious with riffs that invide you to bang your head off and mosh to death anybody next to you! And again I feel some D'espairsRayness in it, but way brutal than D'espa would ever do it. I propose that somebody should send these first two tracks to D'espairsRay and say "Now make your new album sound like this", that be great...
And then we come to the familiar track GOD forsaken. I was a bit pissed when I saw that half of the album are the songs I have already heard, but all of the new songs are rearranged to sound new and fresh, while still sounding familiar. GOD forsaken has had it's production quality lowered on a some semi-trash version which really makes the song benefit from it because it sounds more raw, less dimmed and more intense than in original. Garasu no umi is also mixed the same way and I like how the pre-choruses have been lifted up a bit, making them more expressful, whereabout day after day has been altered to a minimum, but still left as a intense, feeling coloured piece metal-rock piece.
Silence of Sorrow is a fine dance between profound piano tones, strong bass and loud guitars. It's a very good balance between blasting violence and emotions sewn into the verses and chorus. Unfortunately this intense piece is the most unmemorable piece on the album, maybe because it draws links to some other of their songs, or because it laks a certain memorable phrase, I don't really know...
Besides the relatively normal day after day, the second half of the album is somehow a bit bizarre at certain parts. INSTRUMENT OF HELL is an awesome fest of brooding darkness, brutal growling, D'espairsRay dark industrial vibe and mood, until we reach the chorus and Mikaru gets too Hizumi frenzy and goes with the Infection like meowing in singing which neither Hizumi nor Mikaru can pull off and this nu-metal style (From what I have heard all these nu-metal bands always add this additional vocals to words so it somehow sounds like meowing to me, you know like mei instead of me etc...) in the chorus is death to this song which might have been an excellent piece of darkness. God damn Mikaru, God damn *slaps him in the face*.
Then we come to DOKUSAI an almost puristic brutal death metal (yet with slightly more sense, than most of brutal metal pieces I've heard) piece with growling, frantic riffs and double bass all over, being one of the most berserk death metal pieces in Visual kei, as far as I have heared. Oh well, one song of this kind on a album is somehow good for a violent anticlimax but listening to such songs all the time is a certain headache.
We come to THE MOST OCCULT song on the album, Last dance. Why? Because it sounds like a relaxed, POSTIVE and OPTIMISTIC piano and synth drums ballad with Mikaru sounding like some boyband dude who went on a football match and shouted his voice out so now it's hoarse (but still pretty). This song simply gives you the WARM and FUZZY feeling and it's placed between two most brutal songs I've heard this year. It's like putting Yokan between AGITATED SCREAMS OF MAGGOTS and Reiketsu Nariseba on a Dir en grey live (wait! That's actually more awesome, I'd eat both of my legs to see that). I suppose this is the way Dio makes a joke with us right? RIGHT? (because no normal being would DARE to put a sugary sweet pop ballad in between brutal metal pieces or?)
The last track is Dantoutai wa darega no tame ni yureru which sounds like a directed angry mob with knives slaughter fest would sound. You can simply hear those arteries squitring, blood spraying all over and organs flying all around. Downright awesome. A brutal and violently chatarsic way to end this very good album.
Damn, DICTATOR is simply awesome and a great showreel of the new and old Dio so you can consider it as some Best-of LP by this band. Though with a few downers like the lack of surprise tension due a large number of old songs, some not so well excecuted or memorable parts, this album still manages to deliver powerful and exciting metal flaired rock pieces (some going as far to be actual real extreme metal) presenting the overall talent of each member (especially Mikaru, his voice is one of the best around!). Overall Dictator was a very enjoyable, metal fused, dark Visual kei album I know I'll return to. Visual metalheads, don't hesitate at this one!
The very turbulent 2008 is coming to it's end and I think it's a good time to see which releases and bands marked the 2008. So sit back and hopefully enjoy my little summary of what I think is the best-of-the-best this year (with other stuff that for some certain reason marked the year) has delivered.
BEST SINGLE
1. the GazettE - LEECH
2. D'espairsRay - Kamikaze
3. -OZ- - Bulk
Best underground indie debut single of the year: Lucy - Discord
This year has delivered a mass of excellent singles from various bands (some bands releasing several excellent singles) that it was a really hard decision to decide which single had the balls, the oomph, the wow and awesomeness painted all over. I think LEECH was the single that really stood out this year because each track was pure dynamite, totally in-your-face, simply bombing you with energy! A Visual kei rock firestorm!
Among other great singles was D'espairsRay's bipolar Kamikaze with the best B-side that has ever emerged from this band: Scissors. Also -OZ- showed their fangs with the intense, aggressive and overall awesome metal-compound single Bulk. In the special category I have Lucy, a small and relatively new band with a big and broodingly dark single Discord (which can be also considered as the darkest single of the year).
1. Rentrer en Soi - MEGIDDO
2. Dio ~Distraught Overlord~ - Heaven's Call
3. Deluhi - Surveillance
Most ear/eye piercing mini-album: SuG - I SCREAM PARTY/punkitsch
Rentrer en Soi closed their final chapter and became legends with the epic last mini-album MEGIDDO which makes both fans and non-fans get the chills before this great and brilliant masterpiece. Among the runner-ups was Dio with their first and amazing Heaven's Call that delivered a full-pack of metal spiced hard Visual kei songs in the outstanding Dio manner. Also the newcomer's DELUHI first release Surveillance was just an announcement of this band's intention to take over the Visual kei world with their version of strong power-metal fusions and technical perfection.
Oh and there is a band that caused a lot of brain/ear hemorrhages with both it's releases and mini-albums and that is
SuG. If the color/kitsch overused album artwork wasn't enough of a warning to you, you'd be left off in a sugar coated mass of sticky, E-colored candy-punk mass. Do not listen unless you have an insulin syringe with you.
BEST ALBUM
1. Dir en grey - Uroboros
2. Kagrra, - Core
3. MUCC - Shion
Best album not reviewed : Sugar - Sweetest
What? You thought that the best album part wouldn't go without the legendary Dir en grey and their highly anticipated Uroboros, did you? When Dir en grey releases and album, you can be almost more that certain that is predestined to be the album that will mark the year and that will stand as a new level and measure in Visual kei. Though slightly dehumanized and a skillful showing-off nerve play, Uroboros is definitely an album which sets new borders, both in Visual kei as in the music world overall.
Following Uroboros we have the excellent album Core by the neo japanesque kings Kagrra having both their traditional oriental flavored songs as well as some new rock experiments that were successful. Also the most versatile album of the year Shion by MUCC came out as a pleasant surprise with a showcase of such a variety of songs, different in genres but united in a board, recognizable MUCC-style.
Ironically the only five star album this year wasn't reviewed and that was Sugar's SWEETEST: a balanced out, unique, jazzy influenced rock piece with songs that take the breath aways both in style, refinement, expression, paired up with the incredible talent of each member, especially the astonishing voice of the singer LOKI and the guitar-hero skills of the guitarist SIZNA. If it was reviewed, Dir en grey would have been pushed in a one-on-one fight party to the top with Sugar.
BEST PV
1. the GazettE - LEECH
2. Dir en grey - Glass skin
3. alice nine. - Rainbows
Most sexy (fangirl-unfriendly) PV: SCREW - Gather roses
What makes an excellent PV? Well a lot of things. When your jaw literally detached from your skull, the complementary fusion of both the visual and auditory aspect, a unique concept, an artistic approach, a certain aesthetic and of course the omg, wow! aspect. And I think the PV for the song LEECH has it all and leaves everybody simply breathless with one of the most interesting, aesthetic and symbolic PV's around. Also their PV Guren was pretty damn great, but we have to leave the places for other bands right?
Glass Skin by Dir en grey wass a soothing, transient and floating monochrome PV that just seems to take you into a different world, where time stands still. A very pretty and interesting PV. The PV with the fun-factor was definitely Rainbows by alice nine. with all of it's flashiness and energy, fitting for such a loud and energetic song.
And one of the most entertaining and hot PV's around was Gather Roses by SCREW which have almost literally screwed the chicks in the PV. I have never seen so many sex-allusion and subtle sex scenes in any Visual kei PV as in this one. Sex, boob-grabbing, masturbation, lap-dancing as well as cxxk-suxxxing, all is presenting a very subtle and TV friendly way, but enough to drive rabid fangirls wild. SCREW you are my personal heroes because of this.
BEST NEW BAND
1. DELUHI
2. Lucy
3. Vistlip
Label with the most failing new bands: UNDERCODE
You've got to admit that no one has expected such a great band to emerge this year and to have so many excellent releases it's almost not natural. Well DELUHI have proven us wrong, thanks to their unique power-metal flaired songs and uprising lyrics. Though present with only one yet very valuable release, Lucy also gave us hopes for the dark Visual kei with their single Discord. Vistlip had the excellent debut release and a few weaker others but it was still a band that is better than the other new rest.
Oh and a label who hasn't really contributed to the Visual kei scene was UNDERCODE with their heavy mediocre-to-bad oldschool Visual kei bands that all sound the same. But like Kisaki cares, as long as he is making money.
BEST BAND
1. the GazettE
2. D'espairsRay
3. Sugar
Greatest sound change: 12012
Man, deciding on which band deserves to get the prestige title best band was really, really heavy and I had to think very good about it to make a good decision. After some thinking I have decided that the GazettE deserves the Best band title. Why? Because not only have they released (only) two excellent singles (and as such repented for the last years Stacked Rubbish), but the band also had a full scale of various live performances that peaked in performances such as the two-day final in Yoyogi, the midsummer Gazerock Festival and the secret live in Shinjuku that was halted after two songs because the police had to stop (due to 7000 people coming, instead of laughably 250).
Among the other bands that marked this year were also the veterans from D'espairsRay that released three excellent singles and toured a lot, as well as announced a new album for the 2009. It's great to see them active, though not so dark as they used to be. And not to forget a band I discovered this year and that turned into one of my favorites: Sugar! You just have to have wrong ears if you can't get into their elegant and refined jazzy-rock tunes that sound incredibly sophisticated and good.
The band that has experienced the most greatest sound change this year (unfortunately on the worse) was 12012 that went from dark hard-rock to carefree sugary pop-rock, becoming more and more ligther with every single. Such a sad waste of talent and reputation unfortunately.
1. the GazettE -虚無の終わり、箱詰めの黙示 (Kyomu no owari, hakodzume no mokushi)
2. Deluhi - Vivid place
3. D'espairsRay - Scissors
Auditory Nirvana: Dir en grey - 蜷局 (Toguro)
And what has certainly made this year special was the amount of excellent songs from which some took the breath away, while others provided nirvana and chatarsis. Therefore, it was very hard to decide which songs were exceptional. The best song of the year , for me, was the GazettE's Kyomu no owari, hakodzume no mokushi, an apocalyptic piece with a mesmerizing mood, soaring, intense chorus and a aloof, yet present feel, accepting the end of the world with no regrets.
While Kyomu was quite pessimistic, the wast and positive song Vivid Place by Deluhi was an undeniable proof of their brilliance and ability to make songs that literally shine! While I was pretty displeased with the positive-less-dark style D'espairsRay has had on the song KAMIKAZE I was literally blown away by the sharpness and tension of Scissors. If anything else Tsukasa should write more D'espairsRay songs!
And reaching a mantric nirvana through music was never so near and so vivid as in Toguro by Dir en grey, a vunerable and calm song on their overall slightly dehumanized album. A wonderful, mesmerizing song with floating riffs and a lot of chanting.
And that would be it for my Best of 2008. I hope you liked it. You might have agreed on some spots with me, on some not, oh well everybody has got their own taste and favorites. So now I'm wondering what are your best of the best in this year! Which songs, releases and artists marked this year for you?
I hope the next year will be either as good as this one or preferably better!
I hope you can forgive me the big delay of August's issue. My computer had technical problems so I was way unable to release Baku at time. I hope you don't mind it too much.
Since I'm currently pretty busy I'll just post the pages so you can download.
I'll edit this post once I find time.
Please participate in VOX populi.

Track list
1. Carry Dawn [PV]
2. Bloodless
3. 抒情成せるも唯唯生きて在ればこそ (Jojou naseru mo tadatada ikite areba koso)
I'm always glad to see Dio ~Distraught Overlord~ release something. I have followed this band from their very beginning and each of their singles always delighted me. Sure they had great and sometimes not so great stuff, but they are an excellent band nevertheless.
Carry Dawn is their latest single. The title song has got this excellent, atmospheric beginning that I like and the whole song moves in this slightly melancholic direction but with the recognizable Dio intensity and power. The chorus reminds me on the one in Juunigatsu no yoru ni, intensive and loud, but unfortunately not as effective in this song. A different chorus would have been better, but heck the rest of the song is simply great (especially those mosh/growl inserts).
Bloodless is a bit better and it has some really good guitarwork and intensive chorus with Mikaru's voice being as brilliant as ever. I really like this almost classic inspired solo in the middle with pulsing bass-lines really good. Other than that the song is decent, though not as brilliant as some songs they have.
Is it just me, or do I hear a death-metal inspiration in Jojou naseru mo tadatada ikite areba koso. This song is one wicked mix of metal riffs, semi-hysteric growls and Mikaru's strong singing with a punch of double-bass in the pretty melodic-death metal chorus. Love it. This songs really hits my string for destructive songs I adore. Dio did have a few really manic and violent songs but non of them sounded so extreme and yet structured and settled like this one. The melodic touch is just a point more.
Carry Dawn doesn't go higher over the set border like some of Dio's previous releases have, but it still doesn't show a downfall in quality. Just these boys had better, but also worser moments. It's not better than the previous mini-album HEAVEN'S CALL but it still delivers strong, metal flaird, intense songs packed with an old-school touch. If you like Visual kei in it's dark and vicious form, then Dio is a band worth your admiration, love and listening. Nice job guys.
Baku hits second issue! Yeah!
So again I've had fun and haste in making this issue but I believe it has come out quite well (though a bit compressed in article space and similar). I had to hasten up with this issue, but the next issue will probably be widen up to 3 pages or more. So look forward to it. Right now enjoy Baku!
The boys have not just released a new single this month but they have also toured the world going from Europe all the way up to America. I am certain that some of the Baku readers have been a part of this tour. To support Ayabie and to honor their achievements in this month Baku featured them as a cover artist.
But two more bands made it to the cover. The J-rock stars Kagrra,, who will certainly mark the summer both in Europe and Japan, and the jazz-rockers from Sugar. Sugar turned out to be the discovery of the month and as such they are this month's featured artist in Baku.
This time Baku had even more music reviews that really took the most space out of the mag. But in the next issue I'll make sure there is enough space for everything so the whole magazine won't look as a frontal crash of various articles.

D'espairsRay - BRILLIANT
Even tough D'espairsRay have said that there won't be a new PV, it looks like they have changed their minds. Partially...
BRILLIANT PV is actually the live footage of this songs performance used as a PV. Though not even half as spectacular as the song itself the PV is still decent and shows how brilliantly D'espairsRay perform and put their heart and soul into it.
I have also reviewed this PV whose review and a few screencaps can be seen here.
Hopefully the guys will make a flashy, hardcore PV for their upcoming single KAMIKAZE. D'espairsRay rarely do have PV's but all of them (except this one) and mindblowing. So I'm wondering which is your favorite D'espairsRay PV? Mine is definitely Garnet :) because the PV perfectly fits the song and shows the disturbing, true side of Visual kei.

And as always I look forward to your comments, suggestions, feedback, ideas and similar. Enjoy this issue of Baku.
A little announcement: The next issue of Baku may be delayed next month due to my entry exams. But I promise to cover all the reviews and news once I'm done with the exams. Also look forward to a Summer special edition of Baku that will be released hopefully next month.
As from today up to 12.7.2008. I won't post anything on Rockerica because I have to learn and I really don't have time to spend here. But after the short hiatus I will post reviews and everything else from this two week period. Thank you for your understanding and support.
And while I'm here please wish me luck in my entry exams for medicine college. If I pass I'll celebrate it, of course, here on Rockerica. I'll make a huge party on this site and you all are invited to party with me.
Till next time! ジャーネー!

Track list
1. Lord’s Prayer [Listen] [PV]
2. final call [Listen]
3. Allure [Listen]
4. PUPPET SHOW [Listen]
5. 十二月の夜に (Juunigatsu no yoru ni) [Listen]
After finishing the Byakuya ni moyuru hana single trilogy with a quite unspectacular single, Dio has released their first mini-album titled Heaven's Call (Strange calling it a mini album, since Dio's singles hade up to 4 songs!)
Heaven's call shows Dio's new approach: darker, more atmospheric and definitely better composed and arranged.
Starting off with the dark and intense Lord's Prayer which is pure aggression in the verses, but with an intense and very expressive refrain which shows not just that Dio perfectly manages to express complex emotions in the songs but also the great vocal skills of their singer Mikaru. final call is a bit repetitive dark song but in a positive way and has got a very addicting refrain on UNDERSTANDABLE English. Listeners may notice the stunning similarity of Mikaru's voice to those of D'espairsRay's Hizumi (May I say: Better?). Allure bashes off with some heavy and twisted riffs and has got a pretty much regular refrain but which becomes better with every listening.
My personal favorite on the mini-album is definitely PUPPET SHOW that is aggressive and very dark on the verses but surprises with the relaxed and fascinating refrain. Juunigatsu no yoru ni is probably the only weak song on the album, mostly because we have heard the same thing in last dance and Yume wa gareki no naka de, thus has it's special spots in interesting refrains and excellent singing.
Dio's style might have changed a bit to a darker approach but the quality is here. It is no surprise that Dio are getting better with every new release and their songs are getting more complex. Heaven's fall shows again the undeniable talent of this young indie band and is more than worth your time and listening.
A more than an excellent release.
Track list
1. 断頭台は誰が為に揺れる (Datoudai wa ta ga tame ni yureru) [PV]
2. 抱いて眠れ絶望 (Idaite nemure zetsubou)
3. 夢は瓦礫の中に (Yume wa gareki no naka ni)
4. day after day [PV]
Byakuya ni moyuru hana ~Nanji, ware ha zennou no mono nari~ is the 3rd single by Dio and the 3rd part of the single series Byakuya ni moyuru hana.
If you'd heard the last two singles then you would notice what a talented band Dio is. The two previous singles blown me away with brilliant songs that were a combination of hard and melodic rock.
Unfortunately, the third single isn't that brilliant as the previous two. It is a good single overall, but not as mind blowing as the other singles. Datoudai wa ta ga tame ni yureru is pure chaos in every way: violent riffs, screaming, shouting, high speed beat... But the mysterious and rather strange chanting and a bit oriental taste do make this song sounf overall interesting.
Idaite nemure zetsubou has got some pretty interesting riffs, but it does seem a bit misty, without any highlights and bad production which dims a lot the vocalists Mikaru's excellent voice. The single does suffer a bit from bad production and acoustics.
Yume wa gareki no naka ni is in the same manner as the song Last Dance from the previous single and only the song day after day manages to hold up with the quality of the former singles with it's great guitar riffs, melody and singing.
This single is more of a question of taste. I'm not disappointed a lot, but it all could have been better. But still, this single is worth checking out, especially if you are a fan of harder J-rock sound.
Tracklist
1. Prayer [Listen*]
2. 不在という現実絵 (Fuzai to iu genjitsue) [Listen]
3. Last dance [PV] [Listen*]
4. GOD forsaken ~僕は君の着飾った身体を共有する世界の隣人などでは無い~ (GOD forsaken ~Boku wa kimi no kikazatta karada wo kyouyuu suru sekai no rinjin nado de wa nai~) [PV] [Listen]
白夜ニ燃ユル花~死と平等の罪の中で~ or Byakuya ni moyuru hana ~Shi to byoudou no tsumi no naka de~ is the second single by the very talented and promising band Dio (Distraught Overlord).
Dio was one of those bands who I have discovered by accident and was very pleased with the discovery. Their first single 白夜ニ燃ユル花 (Byakuya ni moyuru hana) was a great combination of heavy, dark and very melodic. Besides the very interesting tunes the band also fascinates with it's golden-black visual kei styling.
Compared with the first single the second single 白夜ニ燃ユル花~死と平等の罪の中で~ is a bit harder and darker. The dark and gloomy but a bit energetic instrumental opening Prayer makes the path clear with it's marching drums towards the other tracks.
Fuzai to iu genjitsue is a strong and dark track that mostly reminds on some hard D'espairsRay tracks but keeps a Dio touch to it. Compared with other Dio tracks it reminds on the song Garasu no umi. The bridge before the refrain is really catchy and has got a great melody. One thing first time listeners will definitely notice is the unique and powerful voice of the bands vocal Mikaru.
Last dance is a song I heard first as a live version, but the album version way surpasses the live one. The sentimental and a bit gentle piano intro makes a great contrast compared to the strong guitar riffs in this song. Maybe not the strongest track track on the single (at least for me) but is definitely the most cachy. Fans of Visual kei indies bands and even some major bands will like this track.
GOD forsaken ~Boku wa kimi no kikazatta karada wo kyouyuu suru sekai no rinjin nado de wa nai~ is the strongest track on the album and maybe one of the best Dio songs. I was so overtaken by the melody and strenght of this track. From the very beginning till the end this songs manages to captures the listeners attention and emotions. And again I have to mention Mikaru's great vocal skills. Weather if he's screaming, singing, growling, screeching it sounds absolutely fantastic! This song gradually charges with emotions and energy releasing a quite explosive blast at the refrain.
Till today Dio has released only 2 singles what makes all together 7 songs. But every single song is a beautiful, energetic, hard and melodic masterpiece and the more you listen to it the more you love it. It is really rare that such a young band (formed in 2006.) manages to be so good.
Visual kei indies fans and other should definitely check out this very talented band. You won't be disappointed.
